Plastic Frame Materials

Here’s a little info on what all of those plastic frame materials are all about.
- We feature handmade acetate plastic quite a bit since it allows a frame to be colored in many rich hues, such as different shades of brown or beautiful rich tortoise. Sometimes you will see two or three colors layered in an acetate frame.
- Injection molded frames come in all sorts of beautiful shapes and colorizations. They fit really well and are available at great prices.
- Sometimes you will see nylon temples. These are really great for active lifestyles since they are really tough and lightweight.
I go back and forth between plastic and metal frames. Which are my favorites? It depends. When I use my plastic sun readers for a headband, I don’t have to worry about those little nose pads getting stuck in my hair!!!

Totally rimless frames offer a sharp look but can loosen over time, especially reading glasses which tend to be placed on and off the face with frequently. Fully rimmed plastic and metal frames are more forgiving; but for those who love the clean look of rimless designs, it will help to know the following:
- Repeated stretching of the frame loosens the frame. Always use both hands when placing or removing your glasses from your face. Especially avoid parking your glasses on the top of your head. Use the hard case that comes with your glasses when not in use.
- If ever necessary, send us your glasses for complimentary tightening and six-point adjustment. Or, visit any of our retail locations for complimentary comfort adjustments and minor repairs. This service is offered to anyone regardless of where you purchased your glasses. Most optical stores also offer the same complimentary services.
NOTE: 3pc adjustment is not a recommended do it yourself job. However, with the proper tools it normally takes just a few minutes to snug up fittings and have you on your way. Avoid adhesives, because the chemicals in glue can cause fractures in lenses.

Glass Lenses – Reading Glasses – Why So hard to Find?
Posted March 25th, 2010 by Peter
Glass lenses, once the standard material used for reading glasses, offered excellent clarity and scratch resistance. For fans of this material, sorry to report that no manufactures produce a line of glass lens reading glasses any longer.
Instead, today’s optical grade plastic lenses – mostly acrylic, are significantly lighter and thinner. With normal care, these modern lenses can deliver excellent performance. For lens care recommendations refer to: Scratch Resistance – Lens Care
Even with the best of care, accidents can happen and lenses can be damaged. Fortunately, ReadingGlasses.com offers affordable lens replacement on all of our products should you ever need it. This option is especially appreciated on designer frame offerings.
