Glass lenses, once the standard material used for reading glasses, offered excellent clarity and scratch resistance. For fans of this material, sorry to report that no manufactures produce a line of glass lens reading glasses any longer.

Instead, today’s optical grade plastic lenses – mostly acrylic, are significantly lighter and thinner. With normal care, these modern lenses can deliver excellent performance. For lens care recommendations refer to: Scratch Resistance – Lens Care

Even with the best of care, accidents can happen and lenses can be damaged. Fortunately, ReadingGlasses.com offers affordable lens replacement on all of our products should you ever need it. This option is especially appreciated on designer frame offerings.

Scratch Resistance – Lens Care

Posted March 17th, 2010 by Peter

Most reading glasses sold today are manufactured with acrylic lenses, a close cousin to polycarbonate – the most widely used prescription lens material. The optics is excellent and  scratch resistance is comparable to other optical grade plastic lens materials. Scratch resistance varies somewhat from one lens manufacturer to another as each incorporates a proprietary scratch coating recipe. However, with any lens protective coatings, nothing is totally scratch proof, but offers scratch resistance. What ReadingGlasses.com offers that others companies may not is a detailed final inspection process to ensure each pair is delivered in scratch free condition, along with a final check for lens power accuracy, PD settings, and final comfort adjustments to the frame.

Sound Advise – Proper Lens Care – Protecting Your Lenses:

  • Rinse your eyewear with water only. Never use alcohol based lens sprays or wipes. Alcohol destroys protective lens coatings, especially when used frequently. This is the leading cause of fracturing in acrylic and polycarbonate lenses.
  • Pat dry your glasses with a micro fiber or cotton cloth.  We provide one complimentary with each order. Never use paper towels or tissue. Tissue contains wood pulp by products that scratch.
  • In sunny and warm conditions keep your glasses away from the hot dashboard of the car.
  • Protecting your glasses with a case is important, we include one with each pair.
